Are you looking to reboot or reset your robot? A reboot is like a simple restart, while a factory reset will restore your robot to its original settings (and wipe out all data). If you want to reboot your robot, read this article: Rebooting or Resetting Your Robot

A factory reset is a feature that sends the robot back to its original factory settings, often resolving unexpected robot behaviors, problems with Wi-Fi connections to your home network, or other robot errors.

Important notes:

When performing a factory reset from the iRobot® HOME App (recommended), the action will also remove the robot from the iRobot® HOME app.

  • All language selections, cleaning preferences, and time zones will return to their default state, disassociate the robot and any saved data from your iRobot® account, and remove any existing third-party Smart Speaker connections.
  • Any Imprint™ Smart maps that you have created will be removed from your robot. You can restart your robot’s learning process after the factory reset is complete (for Imprint™ Smart mapping robots).

If a factory reset is performed from the robot itself, the cloud data, app data, and account associations will remain intact.

Why perform a factory reset?

A factory reset is typically recommended in the following scenarios:

  • When you are planning to sell a robot or transfer ownership of your robot to another user.
  • As a troubleshooting step, when the behavior cannot be resolved in another way.

How to perform a factory reset?

There are two main ways to factory reset a robot – from the iRobot® HOME app and from the robot itself.

Factory reset through the iRobot® HOME App (recommended)

As mentioned above, a factory reset from the iRobot® HOME App will remove the robot from your App and disassociate any saved data from the iRobot® cloud.

Use the following procedure to factory reset a Wi-Fi connected Roomba®:

  1. Open the iRobot® HOME App and ensure your mobile device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Wi-Fi connected Roomba®.
  2. Press Settings ➔ Remove/Factory Reset (robot name).

Factory reset on a Wi-Fi Connected Roomba®

  1. s Series and i Series Robots: Press and Hold the Home and Spot Clean and CLEAN button down until the white light ring around the CLEAN button swirls.
  2. j Series: Remove the dust bin, and press and hold the CLEAN button for seven (7) seconds until Roomba plays a tone. Tap the CLEAN button once more to confirm.
  3. e Series Robots: Press and Hold the  Home and  Spot Clean and CLEAN button down for 20 seconds then release.
  4. 900 Series Robots: Press and Hold the  Dock and  Spot Clean and CLEAN button down until all LEDs illuminate.
  5. Wi-Fi Connected 600 & 800 Series Robots: Press and Hold the  Dock and  Spot Clean and CLEAN button down until the robot makes a beep tone, then release.
  6. Roomba Combo: Open the lid and locate the recessed Reset button to the left of the On/Off switch. Press and hold the Reset button for ten seconds.

Factory reset on a Wi-Fi Connected Braava jet®

  • Braava jet® m Series Robots: Press and Hold  Home,  Spot Clean and CLEAN button down until the white light ring around the tank lid swirls. 
Backing up Smart Maps for a Factory Reset
Before starting a factory reset, you will have the option to save your customized Smart Maps for later retrieval. Saving your maps will allow you to restore your customized maps onto your robot after completing the factory reset. By saving your Smart Map, you are bypassing the robot’s need to relearn and map your home and the need to customize the map after the factory reset is complete. To enable this, be sure the “Save maps during factory reset” toggle on the Factory Reset screen is enabled.

With a factory reset, your robot will be removed from your account and all personal data and settings will be lost from your robot, but your Customized Smart Maps will be saved to your account.
